BestofAtlantaConcerts.com - REAL MUSIC

Last night was my second time at a Young Lions of Jazz jam session at Studio 281. Both nights I had a great time, but for different reasons. The first time I went the crowd that stayed for the second set was smaller but the number of musicians in the crowd that got up and participated was larger, which kept me stuck to my seat in the music listening room where the artist perform.

For those of you who have not been to Studio 281 note that watching the performance, though it is what the club is centered around is not your only choice. Last night I took advantage of my other options. There are a couple of lounging areas. One that you access through the back door of the music listening room. It looks very VIP but it is open to all patrons. Also, when you enter the club there are a set of couches, a television, and a pool table outside of the music listening room. So, I spent a lot of my time talking with old friends and making new friends in the lounge areas while keeping an eye on the Lakers/Celtics game. Either way I never go wrong at Studio 281.

But I digress. I really wish last night's jam session had had more artist in attendance. As a fan when I go to a jam session I want to see artist who don't necessarily play together get together and try each other out. I don't come for a straight performance. I know where to catch my favorite artist performing when I want see more of a concert type show. When I go to a jam session I want to witness the dynamics of bringing together different styles and taste that may only have one thing in common, a love of music. In fact, jam sessions are the only time I don't mind if the musicians forget I'm there. I always thought jam sessions were where artist hone there skills.

What do Atlanta jazz artist do to hone there skills or where do they do jazz musicians really pratice before they become regulars at Atlanta jazz venues?
