Antic Clay @ East Atlanta Icehouse...for realsies, not for play-play!

After a couple of false starts, I finally got to see my good friend and terrific musician Antic Clay perform at the East Atlanta Icehouse. Now, I know that some of the bands I've been working with this year will garner national attention one of these days: you know, all over the radio, selling out arenas, on MTV (their houses, not their music). And through it all, I will TOTALLY be able to say "I knew them when..." But last Saturday marked a new experience for me: a venue that I can say the same… Continue

Johnny Rockbridge and the High Chairs @ Red Light Cafe

I have a confession to make: I had never seen the High Chairs perform before last night. Oh, I've heard them, certainly, and their demo CD has been ripped to my hard drive and gets plenty of play. But the last time I went to their show at the Mall of Georgia, a well-meaning lady in a itty-bitty blue car (you had to be there) decided I should set up my table behind the stage next to the amps. Apparently, I missed out BIG on that little decision. I missed the little "I'm soooooo funky" faces that… Continue

Cocktails with Creative Loafing!

I think every little girl since the beginning of time (or at least since the first James Bond movie) has had dreams of getting dolled up to the nines and attending a fancy cocktail party. Naturally, the dream would involve the slinkiest head-turner of a Gucci little black dress that she would wear with exquisite style and confidence, and a date from some random European monarchy to which he happens to be heir, and snippy jealous comments by other women in the ladies room that are immediately "ta… Continue

The Planet Riders CD Release party

It's probably no secret by now that Smith's Olde Bar is, hands all the way down, my favorite venue to work in. The people there have gotten used to my incessant hanging around (Hi, Judd!), and I think even the barstools know to instantly accommodate my eager promo-pushing behind. The merch table upstairs has numerous tape marks where I've stuck up my signs, and if you look closely at the absolute WORST of the dirty graffiti backstage you might notice my distinctively curvaceous "y"s. (heh Just k… Continue

East Atlanta Icehouse

So I showed up for Antic Clay's concerts at the brand new East Atlanta Icehouse on Friday night, only to find out that they still haven't opened! ARGH! Will the frustrating anticipation ever end?! According to owner Mike Murphy, yes; on Tuesday, August 19th. Until then, all shows are canceled or postponed. Bummer. Continue

Obie Jessie CD Release Party @ Churchill Grounds

The difference between a jazz show at Churchill Grounds and a show just about anywhere else is the musicians. That is, the fact that they are good. Now, I'm not saying that I haven't sat through some awesome jazz jams at Kat's Cafe or concerts at Star Jazz and Blues Lounge, that I haven't been fortunate enough to meet some of the most talented, the HUNGRIEST and most enthusiastic artists ever all over Atlanta. But at Churchill Grounds, those talented hungry enthusiastic artists have had 50+ year… Continue

Antic Clay, RDS, and Blair Lott at Drunken Unicorn

Nothing is quite so amusing as going to a hotspot that can't be seen to the causal passersby. I am talking, of course, of the original "underground" clubs and bars that are built out of old parking garages and other abandoned artifices. The Drunken Unicorn, attached to MJQ Concourse, is probably the most famous of such places in the area. With an atmosphere that can only be described as "comfortable, intentional dive" the DU hosts some of the most eclectic bands the ATL has to offer. On July 31s… Continue

Johnny Rockbridge and the High Chairs

Mall of Georgia July 4th! So I admit it, Buford is a little out of our normal circulation area. We are "Best of ATLANTA Concerts" afterall. But do I think it was worth the 45 minute drive to the biggest mall in the state to experience the fair-like atmosphere and hear a great rock band perform? Totally. Johnny Rockbridge and the High Chairs, aka The Rockbridge Band or The High Chairs (just because bloggers get lazy sometimes) is a pop/rock band who you will certainly be hearing more of in the… Continue

BoAC night @ Studio 281

06/28/08 Studio 281 Best of Atlanta Concerts Night With the help of (salty but surely nice deep, deep down) H.D. over at Studio 281, BoAC organized a special night just for our members at the club. Featuring a jazz jam session including the illustrious Henry Conerway on drums, the night was free to any members that RSVPed to our e-vites. The night went well, I think, but honestly the professionalism of the musicians made the night a little dull in the end. To be specific, each musician was certa… Continue

Margaret Mitchell House Midtown Mixer Kickoff

Charlie Wooten Project @ Margaret Mitchell House 6/27/08 The Margaret Mitchell House and Museum, in addition to giving tours and history lessons about the eccentric lady who gave the world Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler, also hosts an outdoor summer concert series called the Midtown Mixer. One Friday a month from June to October, the House puts on a 5:30 show featuring a cool local artist, generally of the singer/songwriter variety. For the innaugural 2008 concerts, The Charlie Wooten Projec… Continue

Kemba Cofield

Kemba Cofield 06/13/08 Star Jazz and Blues Longue Friday the 13th has a bad reputation among the superstitious folk, but those of us with brains know that nothing awfully eventful ever happens when you’re expecting it. Life is funny like that; so funny, in fact, that the unluckiest night of the year can turn out to be one of the best. For me, at least, that was definitely the case. Because this Friday the 13th, I worked (for the first time?) with the lovely, talented, gracious, beautiful, and di… Continue

Robin Dean Salmon CD release

Robin Dean Salmon CD release concert May 28th, Smith’s Olde Bar I’m the newest member of Best of Atlanta Concerts, and am still, admittedly, wet behind the ears when it comes to immersing myself in the live music scene in Atlanta. For lack of funds, transportation, or people to agree with my music tastes, I’ve never been much of an “out on the town” kind of girl. The homebody aspect of my personality evaporated within two weeks of working with BoAC, however. Suddenly, I was not only going out mo… Continue

Thursday nights @ Kat's Cafe

I was at Kat's Cafe off of Piedmont Ave this past Thursday for their weekly jam session, and I must say, I was IMPRESSED. The cozy, couple-owned bar half hidden beneath Helmet Salon contains a three room setup with bar, lounge, and a stage corner. From what I hear, the place was nothing to look at when it was first taken over by Kat and Micheal (the owners), which makes the plush, luxe, and colorful atmosphere of the place all the more impressive. Thursday nights the music starts at about 9PM, a… Continue
