I still can't believe the crowd at Sugarhill on a Tuesday night. Who ever said that no one comes out to see local artist performing live original music on a weekday night apperantly haven't been to the Tueday night R&B jam session hosted by Joi. Imagine, driving downtown after a long hard day at work and to Underground no less. You have to get up and go to work the next morning. The show starts at 9:30pm and may not end until midnight or later. It just doesn't seem logical. However, as the night went on the crowd seemed to get larger and larger. I repeatedly ask myself "what are all these people doing here on a Tuesday night".
Curiosity, caused me to approached a young lady sitting by herself waiting for the show to begin. I posed my question to her with a sense of mild confusion. Even though the show started about an hour late, she seemed content to wait patiently for everything to start. She wasn't there to drink, although there was plenty of drinking, myself included. She told me she had a kid at home and had made arrangements to get this night free. I talk to her a little while just to get make sure she wasn't some kid with no responsibilities and no worries of staying out into the wee hours of the moringing. Turned out she was a real adult with a job, responsibilities and all that grown-up stuff. It's seemed the place was full of people, particularly women, just like her.
Finally, I had to know. Why be here, when you can be at home relaxing or sleeping so you can be ready for work in the moringing. "It's therapeutic." she said. It was simple but I understood. The same reason we stay at home so that we can be responsible adults makes it even more necessary to get out and get our humanity back. Especially on a Tuesday night. It is a rare treat to listen to some great local band giving you all they got even though they are making little or no money. They treat you like a friend and help you escape for a few hours to that place where there are no boss, no kids, no mortgage. Just jamming wtih your new friend.
Wow, that feels good. I guest I'll be back again next week too.
